Question:  Itchy Poodle with mites

My 10 month Toy Poodle Charlie has been itching, scratching, licking for too long. It is getting worse and the medication isn’t helping him.
 The Following is what has been done:
Medications:
1- Tritop Ointment 10g/twice a day
2- Ivermectin Oral/.1mls once a day for Mites

Tests:
1- Skin Scrap

Brand of Food:
Start with:
Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Original Ultra For Puppies through
Adults

Change for:
Same brand, grain free (two weeks ago)

Can Food:
Sweet Potato & Chicken, grain free

Treats:
Sweet Potato & Chicken, grain free, small breed

Vegetables:
green beans
carrots
I notice that his stool is dry; I believe is the grain free diet.
Please help my Charlie; he is a such good puppy.

Hi ,Poor little Charlie the poodle.  Yes, mange mites can take some time to control.  Glad you did see your Vet for a skin scrape test.  Looks like your diet and treats are all excellent choices.

I would only add 2 supplements to your daily program :

My Golden Retriever/yellow Lab had 8 puppies almost 3 wks ago. 
 She hasn't been spending much time feeding them lately.  She will go into the area that they are and stand and they have to reach up to her to try to get any milk.  They appear to be healthy and are growing but what concerns me is that maybe they aren't getting enough or she just doesn't have enough to fill all of them.

Formula for pups:
Make your own puppy formula by mixing a 13-oz. can of evaporated milk, 13 oz. of water, 4 oz. of plain yogurt, 4 egg yolks and 1 tbsp. of liquid vitamins.

Why tear stains?  What causes them?

Causes:
Tear staining results when the tear duct becomes clogged and eye fluid, which can no longer drain through the nose, begins to dry and crust around the eyes and face. Symptoms:  

Symptoms of tear staining include highly visible brown staining of the fur and a crust surrounding the eyes. Other behavioral symptoms include constant pawing or rubbing of the face and can be accompanied by redness and yellow/green discharge if the tear ducts have become infected due to blockage.  Yeast infections may occur and are characterized by redness and swelling around the eyes, itching, and a yellowish discharge that will have an unpleasant odor. Other symptoms are fleas which may block the tear ducts, or teething particularly among puppies.


Complications:
While tear staining issues are mostly cosmetic, if left untreated tear staining can result in severe and costly infections. Infections of the eye are extremely serious as they can lead to irreversible conditions such as blindness or cataracts.  Scratching of the eyes due to irritation can also pose issues including lacerations of the eye or the spread of infection. It is important to treat tear staining as soon as possible to prevent further complications.


Prevention:

Proper hygiene is important particularly if your dog is predisposed to tear staining. Proper grooming and trimming of the hair around the eyes and face will help to keep the area free of additional irritants. Other irritants, such as allergies, can be prevented by removing triggers from the environment. Household cleaners and chemicals tend to aggravate allergies and worsen problems such as tear staining.

In addition to regular grooming, proper nutrition is extremely helpful in preventing tear staining. A qualified diet consists of giving a high quality dog food and a vitamin supplement; both paramount to your dog’s immune system.   Feed your dog food that isn’t filled with grains and “meat by-products”- this will have multiple benefits, including stopping allergies which irritate the eyes.  But dog food alone isn’t enough; supplementation is a vital component to keeping your dog healthy.

Shine Enhancer
Mix one cup of whte vinegar to one quart of water and rub or spray it on the coat of your dog.

Skin Soother
Mix 1/2 cup raw apple cider vinegar to 1 1/2 cups water and use as a rinse after your dog’s bath to help soothe skin affected by chronic skin infections or irritations.

Ear Helper

Vinegar hampers unfriendly bacteria and other microorganisms that are a common cause of ear infections in dogs and cats–keep infections at bay by wiping ears out weekly with a cotton ball saturated with equal parts water and apple cider vinegar.

Skunk Spray
FixerTomato juice is the odor remover of choice for pets sprayed by skunks, but vinegar works as well to neutralize the stink. Soak the coat with a mixture of half water and half vinegar, then rinse with plain water. Repeat if necessary.

Cat Deterrent You’ll need to do a patch test before spraying vinegar on fabric, but the smell of vinegar is a great deterrent for cats. Spray white vinegar anywhere you don’t want your cat to scratch, sleep, or sit.

 I recently visited dogfoodanalasys.com & found disturbing news about the dry food I hav been using.
I did some research & found it to be true & was very upset, I have an english mastiff, 6 mths old, & great pyranese, 11 mnths old.

Hi Chris, Yes, that site is very educational.
 I have used Taste of the Wild in the past and have had no problems with it.   This product has some quality ingredients.  Just may be a problem with large breed dogs.

Currently, I have been using and refer to Life's Abundance Holistic dog food --- My picky Maltese loves it.  We also have my old pitbull on the Life's Abundance, too.

With your Breed of Large Dog sometimes the Taste of the Wild is too high in protein.
You may want to mix it with another food at a 50:50 mix, to lessen the content.

Arthritis is one of the most common conditions affecting dogs in America today.  In 2008, arthritis was listed among the top ten disease conditions in dogs (source: VPI).
 According to recent data, there are as many as 10 million dogs currently suffering from the chronic pain of joint disease, and one in five dogs will develop arthritis or joint disease during their lifetimes.

Otherwise known as degenerative joint disease, arthritis is caused by the loss of cartilage that covers the tips of bones in movable joints, such as the elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, etc. Arthritis is generally a wear-and-tear disease seen more often in older dogs. As a result of continual rubbing, the cartilage wears away leaving bone ends exposed to each other.
Since there are no nerve endings in the cartilage, no pain is felt until the cartilage is worn away; but when that happens, the edges of bones rub together causing pain and inflammation.

Arthritis can also occur in younger dogs as a result of genetic conditions, such as hip and elbow dysplasia. Canine arthritis is similar to human arthritis in that it cannot be cured, but the silver lining is that arthritis in dogs is not a hopeless condition. There are many effective treatments available to ease symptoms, slow progression of the disease and to help ensure your dog’s quality of life.

According to a 2009 study published by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 34 million dogs and 54 million cats are classified as overweight. Sadly, these staggering numbers continue to rise. Just like in humans, obesity is now the biggest health threat to pets in the U.S. Excess weight lowers metabolism, increases appetite and can worsen other medical conditions, such as arthritis and respiratory problems. If your pet needs surgery, extra fat can make it more difficult for a surgeon to operate and increase the chances of complications with anesthesia. With nearly half the nation’s pet population afflicted with weight issues, chances are you or someone you know has a pet that is affected. Here are six tips to help your pet shed unwanted pounds and keep the weight off for good. 1. Increased Awareness There are two main causes of obesity in pets: too many calories and too little exercise. Secondary factors can also come into play, such as genetic factors of a given breed or the sex of the animal. A quick online search will reveal whether or not your breed is prone to weight gain. And be aware that neutered, middle-aged and female pets are more likely to have weight issues. The discouraging fact is that many pet parents accept their overweight pets as ‘normal’, or deny the problem altogether, making the problem less likely to be addressed. Weight is not always the best indicator due to individual variation. For example, one Doberman may be trim at 70 pounds and another trim at 90. In addition, a drooping stomach does not always mean an animal is fat, especially in cats. The best way to determine whether or not your pet is overweight is to have your veterinarian do an assessment. 2. Change Your Lifestyle Let’s face it … far too many Americans lead sedentary lifestyles, and their pets are following suit. It is no secret that we like to sit and eat at the same time, so if we are going to help ourselves and our pets avoid becoming the next victims of the obesity epidemic, we need to get everybody moving more and eating less. Realize that everything your pet eats has calories – yes, including treats – so you can begin to reduce calories right away simply by providing low-calorie treats, such as Life’s Abundance’s Wholesome Hearts. Hi, I've had my puppies since they were 5 weeks old because their mother did not want to nurse them anymore. I got the puppy formula from pet co and they were doing great on that. I started mixing in some soft pedigree food and they were still doing okay. Well when i completely switched to the pedigree soft food they got diarrhea and they've been having it for the past 3 days. Their brother is with my sister in-law and shes feeding him Purina one kibble and hes doing fine. Is the diarrhea caused from the pedigree soft food, or did I just switch them too early. Their brother got switched to hard food right away and hes fine. But my puppies wont eat hard food.

Hi Kimberly, Let's try soaking the dry food.  Place the dry kibble in some hot water.  After about 20 minutes the dry kibble will soak up the water.  You can add just a few teaspoons of the wet dog food into the very Wet kibble.  ( just get the excess water drained, if there is any)

Also, you can give them some Canned pure pumpkin - just mix 2 tablespoons into the dog food 1 x per day.  This will help to firm up the stool.  PURE canned pumpkin with NO added sugar.YOU can do this for 5-7 days at 1 x per day.

I have three tiny Silkshire pups that I am trying to bottle feed. I am trying a recipe I had found on the internet to feed them, it worked before for a Chihuahua pup, but seems to be lacking something they need.

QuestionOur new pup has pneumonia.  The vet has her on Clavomax, and also tried a 7 day course of something the pharmacist likened to a Z pack for humans.  She seems to be doing great, but she has this gurgling that is not getting better.  Do they eventually expel the fluid or is there something we can do?  How long until we know she's better?
Also, she seems to urinate three or four times right in a row, and wets her crate a lot.  I'm wondering if she might have some sort of urinary issue as well, or is this normal for a pup?

Ask your vet if you can give this for the cough... JUST  give a small amount 2 x per day:

Cough Suppressant:  Robitussin DM

Robitussin Dm, Benylin Expectorant (destromethorphan) or Siltussin DM (Silarx) - Look for products containing Guaifenesin (100mg) and Dextromethorphan. While these products are not approved for veterinary use by the FDA they are common practice in the veterinary community.

Dosage:(10mg) per teaspoonful..5 to 1 mg per pound (or 1 teaspoon per 20 pounds) orally every 6 hours. The dose for Robitussin DM in small dogs is 1/2 teaspoon every 4 hours. The usual dose in large dogs is 1 teaspoonful every 4 hours.

Side effects:Number 1 side effect is sleepiness. If your dog shows other symptoms such as dry heaves and shows changes in behavior such as lethargic behavior, take your dog to the Emergency Room or veterinarian as soon as possible.

Precautions:Do not use these products with an MAO inhibitor such as Anipryl (selegiline) or Preventic Tick Collar.

Sound like an infection to me.
